Croxdale Station

Croxdale Station is a 4,500 hectare property located 15 kilometres from Charleville in south-west Queensland.  Owned by the Queensland Government, it was formerly a research centre for the Department of Primary Industries.  Now under the trusteeship of Southern Queensland Landscapes, Croxdale is poised to once again become a centre of learning and development through the fusion of western and Aboriginal science focused on solving some of Australia’s greatest agricultural issues.

Blue Light Shearing in outback Queensland offering skills and pathways for youth

It is the last day of shearing in one of outback Queensland's woolsheds.

The motors kick in and one-by-one the shears whirr into gear. But it is no seasoned shearers stepping up to the board. It is a group of teenagers getting prepared for the intricate process of shearing fully fleeced merino ewes.

Could this tiny tree be our next big cash crop?

Charleville couold become home to Australia's first commercial argan tree crop, if an experimental trial underway just outside the outback town proves successful.

The first argan trees have been planted at a local trial site after several years of research driven by two entrepreneurial Toowoomba brothers, with support from Murweh Shire Council and Southern Queensland Landscapes.

Shearing school an example of collaboration at Croxdale

A 4,500 hectare property just 15 kilometres outside Charleville is poised to again become a research hub for regional Australia.

Listen as Growth Facilitator Geoff Reid explains how Southern Queensland Landscapes plan to develop 'Croxdale Station' through a fusion of Western and Aboriginal Science focussed on solving some of our Country's great agricultural issues.

The first step in the plan is hosting the Blue Light Shearing School, but SQ Landscapes is looking to partner with industry, land managers, education facilities and the local Bidjara people to further develop innovative technology in agriculture for universities, school and researchers.

What other opportunities are there at Croxdale?

SQ Landscapes is looking to partner with industry, land managers and education facilities to further develop innovative technologies in agriculture and education.

We're brining together western and Aboriginal science; and the first step has been through hosting the South West Blue Light Shearing School with the aim of helping upskilling high-school students looking to enter employment in the agricultural sector, particularly within the sheep industry which is currently burdened by employment shortages and lack of skilled workers.

From here we are looking to partner with people who can come onto the property and do plant trials, agricultural trials and connect with the Bidjara People around Charleville.

Croxdale is rangeland country which equates to about 80% of the Australian land mass; so anything that is trialled and works on Croxdale can be replicated across a large proportion of Australia.
